Antebellum mansions, eighteenth-century halls, and the brick-courtyard ceremony Charleston has been hosting since the 1820s.
Charleston has more pre-1900 wedding venues than almost any city in the South. Thomas Bennett House (1825), William Aiken House (1807), the Gibbes Museum's c. 1905 building, the Dock Street Theatre (1736 footprint), and the city's working churches (St. Philip's, St. Michael's, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist) are the most-photographed. Many of these buildings carry preservation rules that affect décor — no wall hangings, candle restrictions, restricted load-in windows. Brides who want the historic look without the rules sometimes rent restored carriage houses or smaller private-house venues that stand outside the historic-preservation overlay.
