What locals are saying
Locals and regular visitors consistently describe Colonial Dorchester as a quiet, underrated gem that rewards history buffs with well-preserved tabby fort walls — widely noted as among the best of their kind in the country — a standing Anglican church bell tower, and active archaeological digs where staff will walk you through what's being uncovered. The whole site can be walked in about an hour, which leads some to caution it may not justify a long detour from downtown Charleston (given larger plantation sites nearby), but at $2–3 on an honor system, most find it well worth the trip for the peaceful Ashley River setting alone.
