What locals are saying
Founded in 1974 (or 1978, depending on who you ask), Gilroy's has a legitimate claim as Charleston's oldest continuously operating pizzeria — a title that does a lot of the marketing work on King Street. The scratch-made pies land somewhere between no-frills neighborhood joint and late-night necessity: balanced sauce, reasonably crisp crust, generous toppings, and a 3 a.m. close that makes it indispensable to the College of Charleston crowd. Order quality is inconsistent on busy nights and the atmosphere skews unabashedly 1980s dive, but that's exactly the point — this is not the place for a considered dining experience, it's the place for a hot slice when nothing else is open.
