Why locals love it
It's where families end up and stay. Shem Creek for sunset.
What locals are saying
Mount Pleasant is widely regarded as Charleston's most desirable suburban area — locals praise its top-rated public schools, quick beach access to Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island, and the Shem Creek waterfront scene. However, longtime residents consistently flag that rapid over-development has made traffic on Hwy 17 and the Ravenel Bridge genuinely painful, and housing costs have surged to the point where young adults and working-class buyers are effectively priced out. The prevailing local critique is that the town has traded its Lowcountry character for a polished, upscale suburban feel that now better resembles a 'modern resort town' than an authentic part of the Charleston area.
