What locals are saying
Historic Charleston Foundation is regarded by locals primarily as a serious preservation advocacy institution rather than a tourist attraction — its credibility stems from 75+ years of fighting for the city's architectural character and, more recently, engaging on anti-displacement and redevelopment issues like the contested Union Pier project. The flagship shop at 108 Meeting St gets warm marks for knowledgeable staff and a deep history/architecture book selection, but the museum shop at the 40 E Bay headquarters has drawn at least one sharp complaint about unwelcoming service at closing time. Tourist reviews of house-and-garden tours are decidedly mixed, with some praising the experience and others disappointed by expectations vs. reality.
