Why locals love it
Cheaper than the peninsula, closer to Folly than the peninsula, and the Muni is here.
What locals are saying
James Island is widely regarded by long-time Charlestonians as one of the last areas that still feels like the 'old Charleston' — less manicured and touristy, with a laid-back, community-rooted vibe, mature trees, and Spanish moss. Locals consistently praise its proximity to both Folly Beach and downtown, self-sufficiency (groceries, dining, a theater all on-island), and strong schools, but the single biggest recurring complaint is Folly Road traffic, where rush-hour congestion makes the short distance to downtown feel much longer. Some long-timers note a tension between growth/development and preserving the island's natural and neighborhood character, with a few residents feeling the town government favors connected insiders over ordinary homeowners.
