Week of June 29
Carolina Day's 250th draws harbor drone shows and a returning HMS Bristol logbook; Magnolias weathers a kitchen fire; and the Leatherman Terminal goes dark.
A week bookended by history and hard news: Charleston marked the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Sullivan's Island with waterfront festivities, a harbor drone show, and the return of the HMS Bristol's logbook to the Charleston Museum — where it belongs. Meanwhile, downtown's Magnolias restaurant briefly closed East Bay Street after smoke was discovered near its kitchen on Thursday evening, and SC Ports made the stark decision to idle the $1.2 billion Leatherman Terminal amid a shipping industry downturn.
If you're heading out this week, the Fourth of July fireworks over Charleston Harbor are the obvious draw — the Post & Courier has a full guide on where to watch and park. Danny McBride appeared at the Charleston Music Hall Sunday night for a reading from his new short-story collection. And Old Towne Creek County Park opens Monday in West Ashley, just adjacent to Charles Towne Landing — worth the short drive.
